A Month of Creative Momentum at Cascadia Media Lab

Over the past month, Cascadia Media Lab has been buzzing with creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning as filmmakers and young artists gather to build new skills and explore the art of filmmaking and visual storytelling.

From producing and post-production to stop-motion animation, our recent workshops have brought together emerging creators eager to strengthen their craft and connect with a growing community of storytellers.

Wrapping Up Our First Skills Lab

“I thought I was ready to dive into production, but this course helped me realize that I need to learn more of the fundamentals.”

Sasha, Emerging Filmmaking

This month, we completed our first Skills Lab - Intro to Producing for Film and Media workshop, an immersive introduction to the often-overlooked art of bringing creative projects to life.

Participants explored the various roles and responsibilities of producers from concept to completion, learning how to manage projects, develop budgets, coordinate teams, and navigate the many moving parts of film and media production. Through discussion, real-world examples, and collaborative exercises, attendees gained practical tools for turning creative ideas into achievable productions.

Producing is where vision meets action, and it was inspiring to watch participants develop a deeper understanding of the leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills that make every successful project possible.

Youth Animation Workshops Are Underway

“This was the best class ever!”

Zara, Youth Artist

We're also excited to have launched our new Youth Animation Workshop Series, in collaboration with the Washington Athletic Club, introducing young artists to the fundamentals of animation through creativity, experimentation, and play.

Throughout the series, students are learning animation principles, visual storytelling techniques, character development, and hands-on production methods. Whether sketching story ideas, creating movement frame by frame, or discovering how animated worlds come to life, participants are building both technical skills and confidence in their creative voices.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the program has been seeing young artists embrace the process of experimentation and discover new ways to express themselves through moving images.

Finishing Strong with Essentials of Filmmaking: Post-Production

“It is incredible to see the stories come together, and the technical skills be applied in exciting ways!”

Derek Edamura, Cascadia Media Labs

As we approach the conclusion of our Essentials of Filmmaking: Post-Production workshop series, participants are putting the finishing touches on projects while developing a deeper understanding of the editing process.

Throughout the course, filmmakers have explored editing workflows, media organization, storytelling through pacing and structure, sound design fundamentals, color correction, and the many creative decisions that shape a film after production wraps.

“Post-production is where stories truly take shape, and it's been exciting to see participants refine their work while learning the technical and artistic tools that help transform raw footage into compelling narratives,” says Derek Edamura, Executive Director of Cascadia Media Labs.

Building Community Through Creative Education

These programs reflect what drives Cascadia Media Lab every day: creating accessible opportunities for people of all ages to learn, experiment, and grow as filmmakers and visual storytellers.

Whether supporting emerging producers, helping young animators discover new creative pathways, or guiding filmmakers through the post-production process, we're committed to building a vibrant and inclusive creative community throughout the Pacific Northwest.

We're grateful to all of the participants, instructors, supporters, and partners who have helped make these workshops possible. We can't wait to share what's next.

Stay tuned for upcoming workshops, community events, and new opportunities to learn, create, and connect through Cascadia Media Labs.
