Celebrating an Incredible Weekend with David Russell and Our Filmmaking Community
“This was an incredible masterclass!”
Derek Edamura, Cascadia Media Labs
This past weekend, Cascadia Media Lab came alive with the energy, curiosity, and ambition of more than 30 local filmmakers who joined us for an unforgettable masterclass with world‑renowned storyboard artist David Russell. It was one of those rare moments when a room full of artists becomes a catalyst where knowledge is shared generously, inspiration sparks instantly, and a community grows stronger right before your eyes.
A Masterclass That Went Beyond Technique
David Russell has shaped some of the most iconic scenes in modern cinema and having him here in Seattle was nothing short of extraordinary. Over the course of the weekend, he guided participants through the art and intention behind storyboarding, how a sequence is designed, how emotion is built frame by frame, and how collaboration between directors, cinematographers, and storyboard artists brings a film’s vision to life.
A Community Showing Up for Each Other
What made this weekend truly special wasn’t just the masterclass itself, it was the filmmakers who filled the room. Emerging directors, illustrators, editors, animators, and storytellers came ready to engage deeply, ask bold questions, and push their craft forward. The conversations were electric. The notebooks were full. The sense of shared purpose was unmistakable.
We saw filmmakers connecting with one another, exchanging ideas, and building relationships that will carry into future projects. This is exactly why Cascadia Media Lab exists: to create spaces where learning and community fuel each other.
A Milestone for Cascadia Media Lab
Hosting David marks a major milestone for our organization. It reflects our commitment to bringing world‑class film education to the Pacific Northwest and making it accessible, collaborative, and rooted in local creative culture. Seeing over 30 filmmakers show up engaged, excited, and ready to grow reminds us that this region is bursting with talent and hungry for opportunities like this.
“Our role is making opportunities like this more accessible to filmmakers in the Pacific Northwest!”
