From Pilot Year to Creative Hub: The Road Ahead for Cascadia Media Lab

Building the Future of Pacific Northwest Storytelling

Building an equitable, community‑rooted creative workforce for the Pacific Northwest

Introduction

Cascadia Media Lab exists to expand access to film education, mentorship, and creative workforce development in the Pacific Northwest. Our mission is to build a space where emerging filmmakers — especially those historically excluded from the industry — can learn, collaborate, and launch meaningful careers.

This four‑year strategic plan outlines how we will grow from a small, focused pilot operation into a fully realized creative hub offering year‑round programming, paid apprenticeships, youth education, and community membership. Each year builds intentionally on the last, creating a sustainable foundation for long‑term impact.

2026 — Foundation & Pilot Year

Laying the groundwork for long-term growth

FY26 is the year Cascadia Media Lab establishes its physical home, tests its core programs, and begins building visibility across Seattle’s creative community. This is our foundational year — the moment we transition from concept to reality.

Infrastructure Development

Our first priority is building a functional, welcoming space where filmmakers can learn and create. We are establishing our Queen Anne office as the organization’s headquarters with future improvements to come over the next 4 years.

  • Developing a second edit‑bay suite

  • Upgraded equipment rental system

  • Upgraded administrative systems such as payment processing and registration tools.

These investments ensure that every participant, apprentice, and partner experiences Cascadia Media Lab as a professional, reliable, and inspiring environment.

Launching New Programs

FY26 introduces our first two educational programs:

These pilots allow us to refine curriculum, test teaching models, and understand the needs of emerging filmmakers in our region. Our goal is to register at least 10 participants per workshop, ensuring intimate, high‑quality instruction, as well as high quality participant feedback.

Generating Sustainable Revenue

We begin 2026 with momentum:

This early support demonstrates the community belief in our mission and helps us build toward more sustainable programming.

Building Community Awareness

FY26 is also about showing up — building relationships, listening to community needs, and establishing Cascadia Media Lab as a trusted partner. Key engagements include:

  • Meeting with local government officials to build program awareness

  • Meeting with community stakeholders to establish impactful partnerships

Our outreach focuses on raising awareness for the Creative Consultancy Apprenticeship, a program designed to connect emerging filmmakers with real clients and paid creative work.

Cascadia Media Labs is where emerging filmmakers find their voice and their crew

2027 — Program Expansion & Apprenticeship Development

Scaling programs and building pathways into the creative workforce

With our infrastructure and pilot programs in place, 2027 is the year Cascadia Media Lab expands into full, year‑round programming and launches its apprenticeship pathways.

Program Growth

We will significantly grow our programs and increase access to filmmaking education:

This expansion transforms Cascadia Media Lab into a consistent, reliable educational resource for emerging filmmakers.

Expand Creative Consultancy

This apprenticeship is a cornerstone of our mission: helping filmmakers gain real‑world experience while earning income. Our 2027 priorities include:

  • Establishing apprenticeship structure

  • Building a client list

  • Developing a project pipeline that supports paid creative work

This program bridges the gap between learning and professional practice.

Build a NEW Narrative Apprenticeship Program

Narrative apprenticeships represent our commitment to narrative storytelling and long‑term career development. We will build a premiere program that will develop the next generation of Pacific Northwest storytellers.

Outreach, Recruitment & Community Building

To support expanded programming, we will:

  • Strengthen partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and cultural organizations

  • Build support systems for apprentices (mentorship, resources, portfolio development)

  • Develop Cascadia Media Lab’s Membership Structure, creating a community of filmmakers who learn, collaborate, and grow together

Tell Your Story with Confidence

Empowering storytellers through accessible, community‑driven film education.

2028 — Growth & Sustainability

Increasing access, strengthening partnerships, and building financial resilience

FY28 focuses on sustainable growth — expanding access, increasing earned revenue, and deepening community partnerships.

Program & Revenue Growth

We aim to grow steadily and intentionally:

  • 10% YoY growth in earned revenue

  • 15% YoY increase in scholarships

  • 5% YoY growth in Creative Consultancy revenue

These targets reflect our commitment to accessibility, financial stability, and equitable opportunity.

Community Partnerships & Sponsorships

We will expand sponsorship opportunities with arts, tech, and media organizations that share our values. Partnerships will support apprenticeships, scholarships, and youth programming.

Membership Expansion

We will grow our membership by 25 NEW members in 2028. Cascadia Media Labs Membership strengthens community connection, provides ongoing support for filmmakers, and builds a network of collaborators who shape the region’s creative future.

2029 — Maturity & Youth Development

Deepening impact and expanding access for the next generation

By 2029, Cascadia Media Lab will operate as a fully developed creative hub. This year focuses on maturity, diversification, and youth programming.

Youth Programming Launch

2029 marks the introduction of youth‑focused programs:

  • Summer camps

  • Workshops

  • Leadership programs

  • Internships

This expansion ensures that young people — especially those without access to arts education — can explore filmmaking early and build confidence, creativity, and leadership skills.

Sustainable Revenue Growth

We will continue building financial resilience:

  • 3% YoY total revenue growth

    • 2% YoY earned revenue growth

    • 1% YoY contributed revenue growth

    • 5% YoY membership growth

  • Growth in sponsorships and grants

Build the Future of Northwest Film

Partner with a growing creative community dedicated to equity and storytelling.

Long‑Term Vision

By the end of FY29, Cascadia Media Lab will be a thriving creative ecosystem:

  • A physical home for emerging filmmakers

  • A year‑round education center

  • A paid apprenticeship hub

  • A youth development resource

  • A community membership network

  • A regional leader in equitable creative workforce development

Our vision is a Pacific Northwest where every storyteller — regardless of background, income, or identity — has access to the tools, mentorship, and opportunities needed to build a creative life.
